Software

Basically, there are three pieces of software you should have to fully make use of what DCS has to offer:

The DownCitySignal SignalBox is designed to receive signals directly from DCS, using the Macromedia Flash plugin. We simply got sick of everyone else's cheezy players always trying to take over our broadcasts, so we built our own. And ours is better. (nah, nah) That being said, if you have any problems with the website or the tuner, the first thing to do is check to see if you have the latest version of Flash installed. The SignalBox needs a minimum of Flash 8 to operate; the current Flash version is 9. Flash is free, so there's no reason not to be up to date.

You never have to download or install the DCStuner, it automatically pops up whenever you click a "tune-in" link.

Winamp. This is the largest non-Microsoft media player around. We highly recommend it not only for its price (*also free!*), features, ease of use, and expandability... but for the fact that it seems to be staying away from that "take over the world" mentality. It's development has been largely open-sourced, and their ShoutCast system makes it simple for us to bring you live events. Plus, it's llama-powered.

Peercast. When we wish to stream events to large numbers of people or broadcast high bandwidth content such as video, we use Peercast to do it. With Peercast, each person tuning in to a stream becomes a broadcaster as well. This means we can serve an enormous amount of connections with very little actual bandwidth on our end. Which also means that we don't have to sell ad space or charge admission!

*To receive a PeerCast, you can either download the "standalone" player, or you can get it as a plugin for Winamp (recommended) and get all your broadcasts in the same place.
